Compensatory vs Remediation Learning
The basis for last weeks class was to introduce compensatory and remediation learning. During this class we would primarily examine compensatory learning with was a new term for me. I had a good understanding of remediation in that it is the teaching and practising of skills or to teach how. Compensatory on the other hand is allowing students to access information using alternate measures. Although, this concept is not new to me, the use of mobile devices to achieve this goal is something that peaked my interest. Coming from a school that is in the process of growing with respect to using technology to make information and learning accessible for students through the use of technology.
Within my classroom I use videos, graphs, images, activities to engage and to make the curriculum accessible for my students. I was blown away when I saw the science book that was presented using the ipad. The features that are available are truly endless, so I will only touch those that I feel are most important. To begin, I loved how there were examples and videos embedded in the text. This is wonderfully efficient and applies to all types of learners by showing them the very process that has been described with the click of a button. Secondly, students are able to organize and take notes as they read and learn all on their device. This offers students who may have organizational issues to store and complete all of their work in an orderly manner. Finally, the ability to have text and definitions read aloud and explained was fantastic and applies to the visually impaired and auditory learners. To conclude, if last class was a demonstration of things to come I an truly excited for what the future holds for students engagement and learning.
